Empowering Mindset - part 2
"Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right!"
Life is about creating yourself by empowering mindset!
Last week we covered how a positive attitude gives you power over your circumstances instead of your circumstances having power over you. Everything we do is about mindset. Irish playwright George Bernard Shaw said, "Life isn't about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." In essence that is changing to a positive mindset. Let's take a closer look at the 7 steps we introduced last week to change your mindset and what you need to consider regarding changing the mindset related to each step.
- Accept the fact that you need to adjust your thinking: We live in a skillset-driven society that emphasizes learning new skills and improving the ones we're weakest at. While this is important, more often, it's our mindsets that need adjustment. In changing the mindset, the good news is that it's much faster to change your mindset than to learn a new skill.
- Identify mindset distractors: Many thoughts go through our minds each day. Unfortunately, the majority are negative. These occur so often that you're probably not even aware of it. There is that little voice in our minds that alerts us to hesitate before making decisions in our life. It makes you think twice before reaching for your goals. In changing the mindset, start paying attention to them so that when you hear that disparaging voice and recognize how frequently it happens, you'll find that your limiting thoughts can be narrowed down to a few key themes. Taking note of this is a major step because we can't change what we haven't acknowledged.
- Flip the switch: Typically, when people look in the mirror, they see their flaws. In changing the mindset, when this happens to you, start practicing the exact opposite reaction. That's flipping the switch. Start telling yourself, "I look good!" Often, just taking one positive step in the right direction is enough to shut out those negative thoughts.
- Duplicate other's success: While trying to replicate what others are doing to improve their mindset might not work for you, in changing the mindset, use it as a starting point to change the pattern of negative thoughts within you and adjust to your personality as you continue the journey to an improved mindset.
- Understand your "why": Understanding your "why" is about starting fresh and deciding on one goal or dream that, when you achieve it, will mean a transformational change in your life. Changing the mindset begins with identifying something that could make a huge impact on your life and begin to take steps to change it.
- Start small-finish big: Determine your goals. Then find a small step forward that you can easily attain and build from there. This requires almost no motivation or willpower to accomplish. And yet, each is a positive step. In changing the mindset, you'll often do more and will feel great because you're overachieving. Massive change requires small steps, repeated daily, which create momentum and yield positive cumulative results.
- Get comfortable with the "F" word (not that "F" word!): When most people hit a wall or experience that "F" word known as failure, they make an excuse or give up. High achievers realize that the only thing that will keep them from their goals is to stop trying...so, they don't! Changing the mindset begins by knowing that you will encounter obstacles and even fail along the way. Be mentally prepared for failure. It will change your thinking when you see it coming.
I challenge you to review the 7 steps from last week, along with changing the mindset tips as we outlined above and try to apply each step toward a mindset change. Do just one thing EVERY DAY that scares you and soon you will be empowering mindset change! The journey of the mind is powerful. Enjoy the journey!
Be inspired! Inspire others!
